Love Suicide at Amijima, jeopardy version

Maddie Bentzlin — 3rd Major Project — 22 November 2020

For my third major project, I have decided to once again create a jeopardy board. I choose jeopardy for my first project but wanted to try it again to improve my style of jeopardy but with a different story. I also chose to connect jeopardy to The Love Suicide at Amijima for an informative purpose if I was a teacher. I want my professor to know that I read and understood the text, but also can connect quotes and different ideas to the themes, characters, and events. Here is the link below for the jeopardy board. I did not complete all squares or columns of each topic but did not feel that I needed to. When the link is clicked, you will have to complete and fill out the jeopardy as if it would be played out in class. This is why I submitted a separate picture of the answers and categories below as well.

My main point of the jeopardy was to show my knowledge of the themes I noticed throughout the reading. The quotes above in the pictures each reveal the main themes that were present.

“My children? My children! You make me weep again. I see them sleeping soundly, happy in ignorance that their father is about to die. Fair babes, I cannot forget you! – Jihei (pg.37)

This quote above is under the themes category which reveals the theme of honor and duty. Jihei understands what he is doing to his family and the consequences he is facing for his love for Koharu. Such as his divorce from Osan, and the changed feelings his children now have for him. But Jihei is aware of this and still decides to go after Koharu.

“When I saw that you had lost your head about her and were likely to commit suicide with her, I was overcome with grief.” – Osan (pg. 24)

The quote above from the board reveals the theme of love. Although Osan was the one that spoke this quote, Jihei’s family is aware of his love for Koharu, and what he is willing to do to not live without her.

The rest of the jeopardy board is events and characters, and I added these categories because if I was a teacher, I would like for my students to know the main characters and main events that happened in the story so they can connect these to themes. The jeopardy game can be used as a great teaching tool for knowledge of the text, and additionally, understanding themes can help form thoughts and ideas about the overall meaning. Of course, the jeopardy board can be fully filled, but I wanted to at least show a bit of what it would look like in a real classroom. Teachers can use this game to get fun and creative with their students, which is why I decided to choose this game to display for my project.

In conclusion, I enjoyed reading this text although it was not my favorite throughout the class. The drama, the sadness, and the storyline itself made the story more of an emotional read. As I spoke about in my other blog posts, I think this storyline has more differences compared to Romeo and Juliet, rather than similarities. The layers of the story form emotional rollercoasters within each character, especially between Osan and Jihei for example. Also the realities of the different social classes, and how they could not be together as a couple. I think the audience of this story could interpret the meaning in multiple ways, and each character adds different emotion and meaning. Also, the author gives way to let the audience imagine the scenery, such as the detail in the beginning about the background that the characters were in. The magicalness and lust throughout made me enjoy it even more, but also with the twist of emotion and darkness.

I just went over a similar project that had a Jeopardy! like feel. You managed to put my idea of what it would look like on paper and it looks amazing! I think you did a really great job on this. I think if you spaced out the themes instead of bunching them all together, space them out. Who doesn’t love long games of trivia? Either way, amazing job!
