Duality in The Dewbreaker

When coming up with an idea for this unessay, I wanted to find something that obviously wasn’t an essay. Obviously essays are SO MUCH FUN to write, but sometimes an essay isn’t the best way to convey the message you want to. Eventually I realized, why not make a video? I’ve been wanting to make videos on literature for a while, as videos can sometimes convey a message better than an essay can. Thus, my duality video was born.

This was my first time ever putting together a video, so I was a bit lost at first. However, I was determined to figure it out. The process was an interesting one; I was excited to create something, but also a little self-conscious. How would it turn out? Would people like it? Would they hate the sound of my voice like I do? At that point, anything could happen.

I decided to choose the subject of duality because it was something that immediately jumped out at me in each story. People seemed to reminisce on that duality a bit, or a decision they made created that duality. It was important enough to talk about, in my opinion. The duality was prominent enough in the story that I was able to create my whole video just off the few characters in Ka’s family (Ka and her parents). If I had talked about every character’s duality, I probably would have had a video that was 30 minutes long.

Overall, I’m happy with the subject I chose and the way I chose to talk about it. Hopefully I’ll be able to do a video for the next unessay as well.

Here’s a link to the video: https://youtu.be/NUKkcmn4pOw

Hope you like it!

Well to start out, I genuinely think you have a nice voice! I was drawn to your unessay in particular because a lot of the duality in the Dew Breaker left me in stunned silence, especially regarding Ka’s father. Your description of how Ka represents the dual experiences of Haiti was really interesting to me. As the child of a former victim/killer, I guess she really is a product of the duality of Haiti in some ways. Overall, this is an interesting topic and I’m glad you chose to talk about it.

This is so great! I get what you mean about hoe sometimes essays aren’t the best form and this unessay is super creative. This drew in my attention so much and I really enjoyed the video. I like how you talk about the duality between all the stories and how you focus a lot on Ka. You described this really well and it connected to the book really well. Ka’s family is so connected with so many people and stories and the whole book itself was a zigzag of emotions. Learning that Ka’s father was the Dew Breaker, her mother’s step brother was the one who caused the scar, and not to mention the fact that her mother didn’t learn this until after Ka was born was crazy. Overall, this is really creative and I really enjoyed it

This is a great video! I was originally going to do a video explanation as well but ended up doing a podcast, but they’re definitely similar! I totally agree with your analysis the prevalence of duality among a lot of the characters in The Dew Breaker. As a reader, one can reflect deeply on the two lives of each of these characters and how the past can be so prevalent in the present. I think even Claude, a minor character who is only in the book for about half of a chapter, is a great example of the complex duality within the lives of the characters. He clearly had one life, made a major mistake, and is living a totally different one now. Great job!

I really enjoyed your video! I never thought about the duality that is in this book. We look at each story and there seems to be a secret that each person has or another life that they are trying to forget. We get to see both sides of every person.
