This second half of the semester we focused on South and East Asian stories. These stories were Shakuntala, The Love Suicides at Amijima, and The Ghost Stories at Yotsuya on Tokaido. Each one of these stories had at least one tragic female character as a main character. For this project, I decided to do an Unessay and make a Personality Quiz to see which one of these lovely tragic ladies you are. The characters you can get as a result are Shakuntala, Koharu, Osan, and Oiwa. The link below should take you to the quiz on the website I used (Quotev.) I also provided a picture of what the link will open to on the website.

At first, I had no idea what I wanted to do for this project. All I knew was that I wanted to incorporate Oiwa and her tragic story somehow because that was my favorite text we had read in the second half of the semester. In my other class, I decided to do a Personality Quiz for Paradise Lost. So I had the fun thought of doing another Personality Quiz but for the female characters from the stories/plays we had read.

I looked into a brief history of personality quizzes and was shocked to discover they first originated as a response to World War One Veterans to see who was most likely to suffer from shell shock. (Eben Harrell.) It has since developed over time and the next biggest personality quiz was Myer-Briggs Type Indicator. Most people probably recognize it from MBTI’s. Some examples of these are INFP, ENFJ, ISTP, ISFJ, etc. It was actually really interesting to read the history of personality tests.

“My inspirations for this quiz were silly Buzzfeed quizzes to see what kind of questions to ask, a few quizzes from Quotev, and my other quiz from Nic’s Medieval class. I don’t know if that counts as another source, but I never would have done this quiz if it weren’t for the Paradise Lost one. In case the links don’t work, The Buzzfeed quiz I linked is to see what Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes character you are. The Quotev one is what live-action Disney princess you are. I also listened to this playlist on YouTube while I was writing answers and the description for Oiwa, because I was having a hard time entering the mind space of a vengeful ghost.

To prepare for making the quiz, I found myself reading over summaries and re-reading certain parts of the texts to make sure I actually understood the plot. I took a look at the video summary of Oiwa that Nic showed us in class a lot because we didn’t have the whole text. I am slightly worried things are missing from the video that are considered important to Oiwa’s story but so far no one has had any complaints on the website comments.

I used some of the same questions between both quizzes I made, but I did try to keep them different by asking questions you would not expect to see in a personality quiz. For instance, in one of the questions for this Project, I asked “What would you do if you found a penny tail faced up on the ground?” And I had a variety of answers. That question was not, what I find, generic and the taker really had to think about their answer.

If I were to do this project again, I would add more questions like that. I would ask more obscure and thought-provoking questions to really step into the mindset of all the characters in the answers. But alas, I was running out of time and fuel so some of the questions were easy. I would also add better pictures to the results page for the characters. I searched the internet for a painting of Osan but couldn’t find any so I had to use an image of her from the movie. The worst part is, I don’t even know if it is Osan. So to prevent this in the future, I would sketch my own drawings of the characters.

Anyway, I hope you all enjoy the quiz! If you want to read the other character descriptions/summaries then I have good news for you! All you have to do is scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the character’s names under Result totals. Below is a screenshot of where to click.

I hope you have fun! Let me know who you get!
