It’s safe to say, thanks to my last project being Macbeth themed, that I like Macbeth. I have a normal amount of love for the play. I was thinking about what to do for this second project when I realized that I could absolutely make modern day Lady Macbeth in the Sims 4.
Lady Macbeth (or Gruoch) is a character I have latched on to; and another character I adore? Moll Cutpurse. So now there’s roommates Moll and Gruoch.
The biggest issue that I had when it came to actually doing this was the issue that the sims 4 has when attempting to put masculine clothing on a feminine frame. It tends to change the frame and body type of the sim, or just look very awkward. Eventually I figured out some outfits for Moll that combined masc and fem clothes; but it was kind of difficult to choose tops that didn’t randomly alter their body.
Moll is a roaring girl, she’s loud, questions gender roles, and understands what’s happening in London’s underbelly (Middleton and Dekker). And the real life woman that Moll Cutpurse is based on, Mary Frith, acted much the same. The sim version of Moll was given the traits bro, party animal, and insider. Nearly all of which fall under the general idea of what a roaring boy (or girl) is. His aspiration on the other hand is neighbourhood confidante, because regardless of how Moll acts and how much she understands the average thief, Moll cares about the people around them (Middleton and Dekker).
I wanted to dress Moll in a way that showed more of their loud personality. And since these are modern day depictions I knew that I could also use more loud makeup and clothing without having to worry about historical accuracy.

Lady Macbeth was a lot harder to come up with ideas for, I knew I wanted lots of green to tie into Shakespeare’s representation of envy as green (Academy of American Poets). I knew I wanted Lady Macbeth to come across as a slight bit older, middle aged, and wear more business casual styled clothing. I put her in pink for her daily wear outfit; I wanted her to have a slightly disarming outfit since she was the one who talked the king into thinking there was nothing wrong (Shakespeare).
Her hair is red because Ellen Terry as Lady Macbeth by John Singer Sargent pretty heavily inspired how I view Lady Macbeth. It also played a role in my decision to dress her mostly in green.
Trait wise Lady Macbeth has nosy, ambitious, and macabre. Her aspiration is mansion baron. Mansion Baron was the closest I could come to her goal of her and Macbeth taking over the crown (Shakespeare). Ambitious was an obvious choice for her. Macabre was also chosen for similar reasons. I could have used the trait “chased by death” but figured something like that would be better suited for Macbeth instead.

The two sims are roommates, not for any romantic reason. I didn’t make Macbeth so my current running thought is that he wasn’t willing to do what Lady Macbeth wanted him to do to get a promotion so she moved out. She’s now at whatever low being a middle aged business woman with a college aged roommate is.
