Project #2 The Red Cross Knight is a Murder Hobo.

Errour’s Home is a dungeon I created for dungeons and dragons 5e. I went into this thinking, what if Spenser was a dnd player. He views his character as perfect, he fights and kills just about everything he runs into, and everyone is out to get him. All in all, Spencer is a murder hobo. For those who do not know, a murder hobo is a dungeons and dragons player who kills everything they run into and treat every difficulty as a combat encounter rather than a possibly nonviolent encounter. In this vein of thought, I designed the dungeon with the idea that Errour is a necessary npc who has knowledge of how to defeat the dragon at the end of the story, and the red cross knight instead sees her as an abomination. Here is a summary of Spenser’s adventure in the session.

The session began with Spenser entering the Feywild in an attempt to find the ancient library of Errour, and the possibly information on the Dragon. I planned for him to fight a few small enemies on the way there, but the player who was playing the dwarven rogue kept complaining of danger, and wouldn’t take part in the battles, so after the first one, I basically had to scrap that and just let them reach the Library.

As he approached the main gate, I described the arching pillars of the place, but he kept monologuing to himself that it was a dank cave,

But full of fire and greedy hardiment,

The youthfull knight could not for ought be staide,

But forth vnto the darksome hole he went,

And looked in: his glistring armor made

He approached the pixies who are tending the gate, and, when asked for whether he has come to speak with the master of the hall, he began attacking immediately, calling them fiends and foul devils. Eventually, he managed to make it to the second chamber, but he had not been told the password, and so was blasted in the face with poison. However, he didn’t stop going forward, using a healing potion on himself, while killing all the librarian trees that I had placed in the next room. I originally wanted some rp between the dwarf, lady, and the librarians, because I had hoped they would enter, but because of the red cross knights actions, they had to help him fight the twig blights. They managed to get the treasure in the room, but I was really bummed about the lack of talking.

Finally, they reached Errour’s room, but they were totally unprepared for the fight, especially when the dwarf and the lady got put to sleep by the pixies. The red cross knight did manage to kill them all because of a busted suite of armor I accidentally gave him at the start of the campaign, but I didn’t want to be a dick about it. However, after he killed Errour and ruined all the work I put into her by making a rude poem, I decided to mess with them a bit. He want and said this of this cool npc I worked on.

Halfe like a serpent horribly displaide,

But th’other halfe did womans shape retaine,

Most lothsom, filthie, foule, and full of vile disdaine.

And as she lay vpon the durtie ground,

Her huge long taile her den all ouerspred,

Yet was in knots and many boughtes vpwound,

Pointed with mortall sting.

Because of this, I increased the CR for the secret room on the dragon, I know it was petty, but Spenser kind of pissed me of during the session. He kept getting super violent in his descriptions, down to saying he saw the pixies eat Errour and that their stomachs exploded. What actually happened was he killed her, and when the pixies tried to heal her, he stomped on them. Im kind of done with this guy, he is boring, violent, and generally just not great to hang out with. The other two players are allright, but I just can’t deal with him anymore.

This wraps up the summary of what a session with Spenser would probably look like. I actually plan to use this for a campaign I am currently running, as my party is looking for an ancient lost city of elves in the forest. I think having them come here for information on how to enter the city could be a really cool encounter. I might change the pixies into more twig blights or possibly lizardmen depending on their level at the time, but I think it is really cool as a dungeon concept. Along with this, it follows the 5 encounter policy for a small dungeon.

Even though reading the title knowing almost nothing about DnD, I was intrigued by the word murder hobo and thought it was really good that you explained it in your introduction, or else I might’ve lost. I also thought, story-wise, it was very easy to follow along, and I thought it was translated to the world of DnD rather well. I don’t know much about DnD but this project has definitely helped as well as explained the concept/character of the red cross knight in a very interesting and thought capturing way.
