Faerie Queene but Make it Pokémon

A Pokemon trainer card of Redcrosse Knight. It features Growlithe, Zangoose, Hypno, Plusle, Suicune, and Victini.

For my second project, I decided to combine Pokémon and the Faerie Queene. The healing well in Canto 11 with its purifying waters instantly reminded me of the Pokémon Suicune, who has the ability to purify bodies of water. I couldn’t stop thinking about Pokémon after that (I’m honestly always thinking about Pokémon though) and then my brain started focusing on what Pokémon it would make sense for Redcrosse Knight to have on his journey to slay the dragon. This is how I went overboard decided that I would make a team of 6 Pokémon for Redcrosse knight for my second project, with an additional bonus trainer card that features what main Pokémon most of the villains would have.

I kind of thought of each major villain fight as a Pokémon battle, and from there I tried to focus on what Pokémon would make sense for that fight as well as how that Pokémon represents a deeper meaning in the text. For example, when I thought of the Errour fight, I picked Zangoose because Zangoose and Seviper (a poisonous snake Pokémon) are known for having a deep rivalry which reminded me of the whole protestant over catholic meaning in that fight.

I also decided to give each Pokémon a full moveset. To do this, I pulled quotes from the text and then picked moves that I thought matched that quote well. I was surprised at how many connections I could make between Faerie Queene moments/ideas and Pokémon in the end.

I wrote something similar for my last project, but I think a big reason that literature matters is how you can interact with it. I mean, just by reading and watching one thing, you can instantly be inspired to create something else. Creativity and stories are so important too. Quarantine is a big example of this – while everyone was trapped at home, most people turned to a book, tv show, etc to help them through that time. And I’m willing to bet that many people, from watching/reading those stories, were able to become inspired and make something of their own. People love and have always loved stories!

Another perfect example of a well done unessay! I haven’t really ever been into Pokémon, or more so able to understand it – Hopefully no one will crucify me too harshly for admitting that :c The fact that you were able to create a Pokémon based off of Faerie Queen and went at it the way you did was so clever! As I said, I wasn’t able to fully understand because of my unfamiliarity of Pokémon…Not sure if it’s worth adding some explanation as to what Pokémon you’re doing and go further in depth for those of us who don’t understand, but that’s my opinion and you don’t necessarily have to do that! I think you did a lot of work and the point of it came across and was a unique idea. I LOVE creativity!

Wow – just, wow. I was a little disappointed at first, because I was hoping for more content from your reflection, but the thoughtful (writing) work that went into each description, from your creature choice to their abilities to pulling out and analyzing quotes – it certainly makes up for the initially small-looking reflection! While I didn’t get a chance to finish reading The Faerie Queene, your quotes solidified your choices for connections. Really impressive work! Have a safe winterim!
